Snipe-IT vs Movitera Inventory
Snipe-IT is a real ITAM app you can host. Movitera inventory is not a Snipe-IT clone. It is the asset record next to the ticket, filled by an agent on the machine.
Snipe-IT vs Movitera Inventory is a category split, not a feature checklist. Snipe-IT is a strong open-source IT asset management application: hardware, licences, accessories, check-in and check-out, labels, a UI technicians already know. If you only need assets and you will host the stack, Snipe-IT wins. Movitera inventory is tickets plus assets plus the Movitera Link agent in one platform. The job is the technician opening the laptop from the ticket, not a dedicated ITAM programme.
Link discovery is agent-based. An enrolled machine can report hardware and list devices it sees on its subnet. That is not Lansweeper, and it is not Snipe-IT's import-and-checkout model either. Printers and switches without an agent still need a manual asset record.
Criteria come first. Every entry states where it stops. For the wider ITAM-and-tickets context see IT ticketing system with asset tracking and GLPI alternative.
ITAM and an asset on a ticket are different purchases
Snipe-IT buyers are usually leaving a spreadsheet of serial numbers. Movitera buyers are usually leaving a ticket queue that does not know which laptop the requester holds. Those two sentences can describe the same company. They still describe two products.
Split the jobs or you will call the help desk a weak ITAM tool and Snipe-IT a weak help desk, and both complaints will be true.
- Dedicated ITAM
- Assets, licences, accessories, consumables, checkout, depreciation, labels. Snipe-IT. You host it, or you pay someone to. Tickets are not the product.
- CMDB plus tickets
- GLPI. Heavier than Snipe-IT, still self-hosted, tickets included, UI that users avoid. The usual next search after Snipe-IT feels small.
- Help desk inventory
- The asset card next to the ticket, filled by import or by an agent on the machine. Movitera. Freshservice assets on higher tiers. Not a full ITAM suite.
- Network inventory
- A scanner that walks the wire. Lansweeper, GLPI's network inventory. Movitera Link is not this. Say so before a buyer expects a map of unmanaged switches.
Host Snipe-IT if the spreadsheet is the only pain and someone will patch PHP. Buy Movitera if the pain is the ticket without the laptop, and you do not want a second product for the queue. Buy GLPI if you need both tickets and a CMDB on a server you own.
The five criteria
Set before the list, applied the same way to every tool.
- 01
What sits next to the asset
A ticket, a vault, nothing. A dedicated ITAM app can win the asset form and still lose the day if the technician lives in another tool.
- 02
How the record gets there
Manual entry, CSV, checkout workflow, or an agent on the machine. Agent-based subnet discovery is not a network scanner. Import is not discovery.
- 03
Who hosts it
Your server and your upgrades, or the vendor. Plugin and PHP breakage counts as maintenance.
- 04
Licence and labour
Free open-source licence plus sysadmin hours, hosted Snipe-IT, per-agent USD ITSM, or per-seat BRL with Link devices.
- 05
Whether you actually need only assets
If passwords and tickets will stay in other tools forever, Snipe-IT is correctly scoped. If they will not, you are buying a second and third product on day two.
Five ways to stop using the spreadsheet
Snipe-IT is second because the first job on this page is tickets plus assets, not ITAM alone.
Movitera
Origin: BrazilBest for
In-house IT that wants the asset on the ticket, hardware from an agent, and a vault in the same login, not a dedicated ITAM install.Movitera inventory is part of an IT help desk with assets, passwords and AI in one platform. Movitera Link inventories hardware on enrolled machines, can list devices the agent sees on its subnet, and opens a remote session from the asset. Each enrolled Link device is billed in BRL, with the first 50 free on a paid plan — asset records are never billed. It is not Snipe-IT, and it is not Lansweeper.
Linking equipment to a ticket happens inside the ticket. The search already surfaces the requester's assets. What it delivers- Asset linked from the ticket, same workspace as the vault
- Link agent: hardware inventory, agent-based subnet discovery, remote session
- CSV/XLSX import, warranties, licences, assignment history
- R$ 4 per Link device after the first 50 free. Requesters free
Where it stops- Billing is in Brazilian reais. Teams that need an invoice in another currency should check this before shortlisting.
- Movitera Link has to be installed on a machine to inventory its hardware or open a remote session. Devices the agent does not see stay out of automatic discovery.
- The catalogue of ready-made integrations is smaller than Atlassian's, Freshworks' or Zendesk's. Anything outside it goes through the API.
- Not a Snipe-IT-class dedicated ITAM app. Accessories, consumables and label-heavy checkout workflows are not the product.
- Link discovery is agent-based, not a dedicated network inventory of unmanaged infrastructure.
- Devices the agent does not see stay out of automatic discovery. You still create those records by hand or import.
How it bills Per-seat subscription billed in Brazilian reais, from R$ 9 to R$ 129 per month depending on access level. 7 days free, no card. Requesters who only file tickets do not consume a paid seat.

Origin: United StatesBest for
Teams that only need assets, will host the application (or pay for hosted), and do not want a help desk bundled in.Snipe-IT is a strong open-source ITAM application. Assets, licences, accessories, consumables, components, check-in and check-out, labels, a community that has been doing this for years. The licence can be free. The operation is not. Someone runs the stack. It will not replace your ticket queue or your password vault.
What it delivers- Open-source ITAM with a checkout model technicians already understand
- Self-host, or paid hosted from the project
- Licences, accessories and consumables in the core product, not an afterthought
Where it stops- Not a ticketing system. You will keep something else for the queue.
- Not a password vault.
- You own upgrades and hosting unless you buy hosted. That labour is the real licence.
- Discovery is not Lansweeper. Most records arrive by import, audit or checkout, not by a network walk.
How it bills Community self-host: free licence. Paid hosted and support from the project. Implementation is your sysadmin.
GLPI
Origin: France · large Brazilian communityBest for
Teams that want tickets and a CMDB on a server they own, and will maintain PHP, plugins and the agent.GLPI still does more ITAM in one install than Snipe-IT or most SaaS help desks: network inventory, CMDB, licences, contracts, tickets. The UI is the tax. See [GLPI alternative](/glpi-alternative) if that is the stack you are leaving rather than Snipe-IT.
What it delivers- Tickets and CMDB together
- Network inventory in the core product
- No licence fee on the community edition
Where it stops- You own PHP, the database, upgrades and plugin compatibility.
- The portal shows its age. End-user adoption follows.
- A real credential vault depends on plugins or a second product.
How it bills Community edition: free licence. GLPI Network cloud, support and extras are paid.
Freshservice
Origin: United States / IndiaBest for
Teams that want assets inside a cloud ITSM suite and will pay per agent in USD for the tier that includes ITAM.Freshservice puts the asset next to an ITIL ticket if you buy the plan that holds ITAM. It is not Snipe-IT, and it is not a vault. For companies leaving a spreadsheet into a process suite rather than into a hosted agent-plus-ticket desk, it is the usual cloud pick.
What it delivers- Assets inside the same product as incident and change, on the right tier
- Polished portal
- No PHP to patch
Where it stops- ITAM often sits on higher plans. Confirm before you compare the sticker to Snipe-IT.
- USD per agent.
- Not a dedicated open-source ITAM app. Not a password vault.
How it bills Per agent per month in USD. Asset features often on higher tiers. Confirm the current Freshworks list.
ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus
Origin: IndiaBest for
Teams that want ITSM plus ITAM from one vendor, including on-prem, and will treat implementation as a project.ManageEngine is heavier than Snipe-IT and heavier than Movitera. The asset module is real. The on-prem edition is real. The labour to land it is real. It is not a credential vault.
What it delivers- Service desk and asset management from one vendor
- On-premise option
- Audit reporting
Where it stops- A project, not an afternoon of CSV.
- Easy to over-buy modules.
- Usually USD, quote-driven at ITAM tiers.
How it bills Edition and modules, commonly USD.

Which of these fits you
Four situations. Snipe-IT is the right answer in one of them.
- Tickets, enrolled laptops and passwords in three places. You do not want to host PHP
- Movitera. Snipe-IT would fix the spreadsheet and leave the queue and the vault where they are.
- You only need assets, someone will host it, and the ticket tool can stay
- Snipe-IT. That is the product it is. Movitera is more help desk than you asked for.
- You need tickets and a CMDB on a server you own, including network inventory
- GLPI, or pay for GLPI Network. Snipe-IT will feel thin. Movitera will feel thin on the CMDB.
- You want ITIL process in the cloud and assets on the same vendor
- Freshservice or ManageEngine. Confirm which tier holds ITAM before you compare it to a free Snipe-IT licence.
