Zendesk for internal IT
Zendesk is excellent at customer tickets. Internal IT that buys it pays contact-centre prices and still keeps the laptop and the password somewhere else.
Zendesk for internal IT is a search that usually starts with a brand the company already knows from customer support. The product is a CX platform: omnichannel queues, CSAT, a marketplace, agents billed in dollars. Employees with a broken laptop are not customers. The record you need next to their ticket is the asset and the credential, not a satisfaction survey.
Internal IT that standardises on Zendesk pays CX prices and still stands up a second tool for inventory and a third for passwords. Movitera is an IT help desk with assets, passwords and AI in one platform. Freshservice and Jira Service Management are the ITSM alternatives people shortlist when they already rejected a contact centre. Zendesk stays on this list so you can skip it on purpose.
Criteria come first. Every entry states where it stops. For ticketing without the CX detour see Best IT ticketing system in 2026.
A customer desk is not an IT desk
Zendesk was built so a brand can talk to buyers across email, chat, voice, social and WhatsApp, with CSAT on the way out. That is a real product. It is not the product that knows which laptop the employee was issued and which shared admin password the last technician used.
If you treat those as the same purchase, you will spend CX money and still run a spreadsheet.
- CX / contact centre
- Customers, CSAT, omnichannel, a marketplace of apps. Zendesk, Freshdesk, Tiflux, Movidesk. WhatsApp here means brand-to-buyer, not IT-to-employee, even when the protocol is the same.
- Cloud ITSM
- Employees as requesters, incident and change, a service catalogue. Freshservice, Jira Service Management, ManageEngine. Still not a vault.
- IT ops desk
- Tickets plus assets plus vault plus wiki. Movitera. Smaller process surface. The laptop is a first-class record.
- Why internal IT lands on Zendesk
- The company already pays for it, the agents already know the UI, and somebody said 'it is just tickets'. That last sentence is how inventory and passwords stay outside the tool.
Use Zendesk when the requester is a customer. Use an IT product when the requester is an employee with a device and an account. Paying CX rates for the second job is how the IT budget funds someone else's contact centre.
The five criteria
Set before the list, applied the same way to every tool.
- 01
Who the requester is
Customer or employee. If the product's demo is CSAT and social channels, it was not designed for the laptop lifecycle.
- 02
Asset on the ticket
Linked hardware with an owner and a warranty, or a custom field that says 'Sara's Mac'. Discovery via an agent is not Lansweeper. Custom objects are not inventory.
- 03
Password on the ticket
A vault with a trail, or a private comment. CX platforms almost always leave this to another product.
- 04
The bill, in the currency you can pay
Per-agent USD suites, or per-seat BRL with free requesters. Internal IT has many requesters and few technicians. That ratio punishes per-agent CX pricing if you are not careful.
- 05
Time to a usable internal queue
Hours, not a contact-centre implementation. Marketplace apps that recreate ITAM do not count as native.
What internal IT should shortlist instead
Zendesk is ranked last among these five on purpose: it is the famous wrong category.
Movitera
Origin: BrazilBest for
In-house IT that was handed Zendesk because the company already uses it for customers, and needs tickets, assets and passwords in one workspace.Movitera is an IT help desk with assets, passwords and AI in one platform. WhatsApp is a two-way ticket channel on the company's own Meta number, with the sender billed as an extra seat. Requesters who only file tickets are free. It is a poor Zendesk replacement if your queue is customers. It is a better internal IT desk than a CX suite with a custom asset field.
Linking equipment to a ticket happens inside the ticket. The search already surfaces the requester's assets. What it delivers- Tickets, inventory, vault and wiki in one login
- Free requester seats. Technicians and vault users are the paid line
- WhatsApp two-way via Meta. Slack is not a native channel
- Public BRL pricing, 50 free Link devices, 7-day trial, no card
Where it stops- Billing is in Brazilian reais. Teams that need an invoice in another currency should check this before shortlisting.
- Movitera Link has to be installed on a machine to inventory its hardware or open a remote session. Devices the agent does not see stay out of automatic discovery.
- The catalogue of ready-made integrations is smaller than Atlassian's, Freshworks' or Zendesk's. Anything outside it goes through the API.
- Not a contact centre. No CSAT-as-a-product, no social-channel suite, no Zendesk-class marketplace.
- Slack is not a documented native intake channel. If the internal queue lives in Slack, look at Jira Service Management.
How it bills Per-seat subscription billed in Brazilian reais, from R$ 9 to R$ 129 per month depending on access level. 7 days free, no card. Requesters who only file tickets do not consume a paid seat.
See MoviteraFreshservice
Origin: United States / IndiaBest for
Internal IT that wants ITIL process in the cloud and is leaving Zendesk because employees are not customers.Freshservice is the IT cousin of Freshdesk. Incident, problem, change, a portal employees will use. Asset management sits in higher tiers. It is a stronger process product than Movitera. It is not a password vault. Billing is per agent in USD. See [Movitera vs Freshservice vs ManageEngine](/movitera-vs-freshservice-vs-manageengine).
What it delivers- ITIL processes without a modelling project
- Built for employees, not buyers
- Automation and AI for triage
Where it stops- USD per agent. Portal licences can surprise you.
- ITAM and AI often sit on higher plans.
- Credentials are not a first-class vault.
How it bills Per agent per month in USD. Confirm current Freshworks tiers and which plan holds assets.
Jira Service Management
Origin: AustraliaBest for
Internal IT in a company that already lives in Jira, including teams that need a Slack app more than WhatsApp.Jira Service Management is the honest Zendesk alternative when the constraint is Atlassian, not CX. The incident already wants to be an issue. Hardware inventory and a vault are other products. There is a Slack app. WhatsApp is not the native story. See [Jira Service Management vs Movitera](/jira-service-management-vs-movitera).
What it delivers- Native Jira and Confluence
- Slack app for intake and notifications
- Dev-adjacent tickets without a second queue
Where it stops- Awkward if you are not an Atlassian shop.
- Assets and credentials are not the core product.
- USD per agent.
How it bills Per agent, USD, on Atlassian cloud plans.
ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus
Origin: IndiaBest for
Internal IT that wants tickets plus assets in one vendor, including an on-prem option, and does not want a CX suite.ServiceDesk Plus covers the IT job Zendesk leaves on the table: the asset next to the ticket, with an edition you can host. Implementation is a project. It is not a credential vault. It is still closer to internal IT than Zendesk is.
What it delivers- On-premise and cloud
- Service desk plus asset management
- Audit reporting
Where it stops- A project to land, not a weekend cutover from Zendesk.
- Easy to over-buy modules.
- Usually USD, quote-driven at ITAM tiers.
How it bills Edition and modules, commonly USD.
Zendesk
Origin: United StatesBest for
Customer support. Listed so internal IT can decline it with a reason, not a hunch.Zendesk is a strong CX platform. Slack and WhatsApp exist as customer channels. For internal IT it is an expensive ticket queue that still needs inventory and a vault beside it. If the requesters are customers, stop reading this page and buy Zendesk (or Tiflux, or Movidesk). If the requesters are employees, you are in the wrong category.
What it delivers- Omnichannel customer support, including Slack and WhatsApp as CX channels
- A marketplace large enough to paper over missing IT modules, at extra cost
- A UI your outsourcer already knows
Where it stops- Designed for customers. The laptop and the shared admin password are not native records.
- Per-agent USD suites. Internal IT's requester-to-technician ratio makes that painful if you licence the wrong people.
- Marketplace ITAM and password apps are still other products you have to run.
How it bills Per agent, USD, in suites. Messaging channels and marketplace apps are often extra. Confirm the current Zendesk list.

Which of these fits you
Four situations. Zendesk is the answer only in one of them.
- Employees messaging IT. Laptops, passwords, a spreadsheet that was supposed to be inventory
- Movitera. Zendesk would charge CX rates for a queue that still misses the two records that matter.
- Employees as requesters, and you want documented ITIL in the cloud
- Freshservice, or ManageEngine if you also need on-prem. Not Zendesk.
- The company already runs Jira, and Slack is where requests get lost
- Jira Service Management. Movitera does not document a Slack app.
- The people writing in are customers of the brand
- Zendesk, Tiflux or Movidesk. This page is the wrong brief. See [Tiflux alternatives](/tiflux-alternatives) if you are comparing Brazilian CX desks.
